Big Five Safari Animals: The Lion Is The King Of All These Beasts

Among the big five safari animals, (elephant, lion, rhino, buffalo and leopard) the lion is of course the king, and its majesty inspires you once you have had the privilege of viewing it in its natural habitat. It is also the largest of all of Africas cats and its regal appearance is especially pronounced in the male version that with its rich gold skin makes it one of the most awe-inspiring of all animals.

African Rhino

The African rhino or more precisely the South African white rhino is a rare species that at one time was one of the big five safari animals that were on the brink of extinction though today they are mercifully found in good numbers. Their outgrowth on top of the muzzle is a distinguishing feature of this big five safari animals and the term White Rhino owes its origins to the Dutch term Wide Lip Rhinoceros which in turn is a reference to the wide as well as square lips of the rhino.

The elephant is the largest land-based mammal and he is another royal example of the big five safari animals. The African Elephant is either a savannah elephant or the forest elephant. It can weigh between five thousand to six thousand kilograms and is all of between nine and eleven feet tall though females are less heavy, weighing between three thousand and three and a half thousand kilos and they grow to no more than 8.4 feet in height.

Though the leopard is the smallest of the cat species, it is still one of the big five safari animals and the Kenyan leopard in particular is truly striking in its appearance. It has brown colored skin and plenty of black colored spots and is found to be generally resting on branches of trees and even on ant hills and sometimes on rocks. Though individualistic by nature, this big five safari animals is known to hunt in a group and it can swim in deep waters as well as leap in order to catch its prey.

The African buffalo is the other big five safari animals and it is truly a very dangerous animal that can easily attack and kill humans more than any of the other big five safari animals. These big five safari animals were grouped together as being the animals that are hardest to hunt rather than because of their actual size.

For those people that are interested in visiting Kenya to catch a close-up glimpse of the Kenya safari animals, there is good news because each of the big five safari animals found in other parts of Africa are also found in abundance in Kenya as well.
